Gladys West (under construction!!!)

Born October 27, 1930, in Sutherland, Virginia

Main Contribution:

West is known for being a major part of the creation of GPS, as she worked on the development of the Seasat and GEOSAT satellites.

Other Contributions:

• Granted a Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineering
• Earned a Caltech Faculty Teaching Award
• Was a co-recipient of the Breakthrough Prize

Academic Events

• Earned a degree in mathematics from Virginia State College (now Virginia State University), and later receieved a master's degree in the same subject
• Earned a second master's degree, but in public administration
